Fed; New funding arrangements for ATSIC
The federal government has announced major changes to the funding arrangements forthe peak indigenous body to improve accountability.
Indigenous Affairs Minister PHILIP RUDDOCK says the government will be taking actionin the May Budget to separate the roles undertaken within ATSIC.
He says that from July 1 this year, all individual funding decisions concerning programsdelivered by ATSIC will be made by officers of the administrative arm.
ATSIC Commissioners and Regional Councillors will continue to determine policies andpriorities for the spending of the money, in line with the original intention behind theestablishment of ATSIC.
Mr RUDDOCK says the interim measure will promote good governance and accountabilityby removing the potential for conflicts of interest in decision-making over funding.
